Music Like Dirt

How nice. I just received a mail from a friend of mine to tell me that my track When the Gods Punish Me from the "Seventeen EP" placed at No 84 in Music Like Dirt's top tracks of 2008 list, just ahead of Vampire Weekend and behind Monkey.

Franz Ferdinand "Tonight"

Over the years, I have lost count of the amount of biographies that I have read that start out as interesting tales of a person's life before the author (normally a poor one) falls into the trap of set-date story telling (i.e. - the interesting story is replaced by blow-by-blow diary-centric accounts). Suddenly the interest has dissipated and is replaced by cold hard paragraphs that are void of emotion and feeling.
If Franz Ferdinand were a book, they would most likely fall into this category - housed like a cheap novelette on the shelves of WHSmith in Heathrow Airport.

There was the initial flurry of Franz Ferdinand, a superb debut album with songs built-up over a period of time, that exuded style and elegance. While You Can Have it So Much Better was nowhere near as good as their debut, it built on the success of Franz Ferdinand and solidified them in the eyes of the public.
But that was in 2005 and how many bands of three/four years ago are realistically still going strong? A quick scan will reveal that the likes of the View, Cribs, the Fratellis and the Shins have (thankfully) fucked right off into the distance to be forgotten forever, while the future isn't overly positive for the Kaiser Chiefs after a lacklustre third effort from them in 2008.
Meanwhile, two other acts from that group, Kings of Leon (Sex on fire?? Get some cream for that you sick cunt!!) and the Killers emerged last year dressed up as two types of Chernobyl disaster tainted versions of Bon Jovi - and both released undeniably shit records to prove it - but what of our Scottish friends Franz?

The third effort tends to be where most artists either solidify their fan base with a more assured (nee commercial) effort (see Kings of Leon and Killers) or lose their support under the realisation that their limits had peaked on their debut. As much as I like Franz Ferdinand I can't help but get the feeling that they have tipped ever so slightly into the latter category.

There is a line that says "...if you're low on ideas, immerse yourself in 'foreign cultures and ideas' and basque in glow of new found musical influence..." In other words "...make a concept album..." and dear friends, Franz Ferdinand have recorded a concept album.
Signs were ominous early on when lead singer, Alex Kapranos, released a statement proclaiming that they wanted the album to be "...quite new, to be different sounding from everything we've ever done before..." Other reports claim that "...there are heavy elements of dub and streaks of electronica..."
The album begins with the single Ulysses and upon the first few listens, the intro and verse sound bizarrely like Franz Ferdinand trying very hard not to sound like Franz Ferdinand, while the chorus sounds like an average cover band working a Franz Ferdinand track. Ulysses is most definitely an odd choice for lead single, but as I discovered later, it is one of the better songs on the recording.

For all their claims of experimentation and new directions, I can't help but notice many of the songs blend into each other like cheap mush and are utterly forgettable and while there are one or two good numbers along the way (mainly Twilight Omens and Bite Hard), I can't help but be bored shitless. Eventually I am forced to switch the disc off after Can't Stop Feeling (cheap Hot Chip rip-off) in an effort to save money by not having my face crash into my keyboard (and therefore possibly having to replace several of my teeth).

This album is fullllll of good intentions unfulfilled and it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain that simply replacing the odd guitar lick with a few electronic blips simply not portray enough conviction to be wholly convincing and in the end when they are stripped down, the songs are simply not strong enough. I even have a little notepad with all the song titles listed and after most of them are the words 'meh', 'hmm' or alternatively 'ehh'.

So if Franz Ferdinand are indeed a cheap novel, how long before we are treated to the final chapter in the form of the inevitable compilation, before they split-up due to "musical (in)differences".
If you want to check it out for yourself, the songs are available to stream (for a few days more) on their MySpace (naturally), but your time might be better spent reading a good book instead. It's such a shame that cheap novels so rarely have well written epilogue's.

Tenaka "EPonymously Titled"

When this independent release from Galway based electronic musician, Tenaka (aka Ronan Carroll), arrived on my doormat the other day, there were serious intentions to plant myself down, give it a blast and stick pen to paper in order to doodle and jot down useless notes.

Of course for obvious reasons (once again, see below) I took my time, but this allowed me the luxury to kick back, relax and partake in some simple absorption (i.e. - flake out).
Following six days of erring and ahhing, thinking and sweating, I finally crouched down, knocked off the lights and eventually... fell asleep. But first, the EP.
"EPonymously Titled" contains four tracks of chilled out dark electronica that has been rather neatly crafted together by Carroll. The release blends itself from New Order-esque bass lines with a very Death in Vegas / Royksopp feel - although thankfully this CD never falls into chasm of utter boredom that Royksopp inhabit.

Admittedly the release isn't entirely perfect - the vocals on Ain't Nobody slightly out of sequence with the rest of the track and the percussion on Someday is far too static - but for a debut issue, there is some pretty good stuff going on here.
Open Up is probably the best song on the disc, bringing to light some nice touches reminiscent of Death in Vegas - my only quibble being that when the track reversal near the end is somewhat unnecessary. The fourth of four is Alaskan, an nice driving track that is just the touch to finish the EP.
This definitely an excellent debut effort and while there are still remnants of various musical influences at work, I am expecting there to be some solid progression come the next release.

The Dagger Lees (Stagger Lee) split

Wow!! Everything seems to be going south at the moment. In a few months, Ireland has lost NightShift, Road Records, State Magazine and now the Dagger Lees (formerly Stagger Lee).

One must admit that I find this somewhat disappointing, not only because they were the last band to ever play the Electric Fix when I closed up in 2007 (hmmm... time flies), but also because the were quite good.
Anyway, they have released a statement, so I might as well let lead singer Donna McCabe explain all.

Dear friends,....

....

It's a strange day when you come on here to say your farewells, but alas here we are. With no intention of writing some kind of long eulogy to ourselves or anything of the sort, we did, however, all feel that what we achieved as The Dagger Lees (nee Stagger Lee) was deserving of a proper and final end and so a few words is at least fitting.....

The past 3 years have been one hell of a ride! From all the usual madness of being in a band and working and living with both of our lady rockers raising mini rockers at the same time, plus touring with some great bands, recording music we loved, writing, playing, falling down, getting up again..and lovin' every minute of it! Life has thrown many curveballs our way, and more than once we survived them, dusted ourselves off and got back to work. The past couple of months though have thrown some sad aul curveballs that have meant that the band couldn't continue in its current form, and as much as that pains us, our date with the Diamond will have to wait another day.....

....

All good things come to an end, and so to everyone who was involved with us in anyway - a sincere thank you! Much love must go to Robbie Thing, Leo Pearson, Benjo, Davey, Jessie, Susie, Dan Beatnik, Andy Motorsounds, Loreana, Paul, Jason, Kelley, Mandy, Una, Warren, Karl, James, Niamh, Sinead, Edel, all the Phantom Family and especially to the mini Lees - Dylan and Steven. And to our families for all their support and everyone who came to a gig, hummed a tune, had a dance, wrote about us, helped out with shows, took a picture, bought a song - a really big and very sincere THANK YOU from all of us.....

Each of us can look back on the dedication, love, blood, sweat and tears we put in to making Stagger Lee/The Dagger Lees, something we are really proud of. We can happily say that we still love the bones of each other and there’s not many bands can say that!
We're all moving to pastures new (the first of which to look out for is Benni’s solo project Hathor Vein!!).... so we'll see you in the next lifetime.

Lots of love,
....

.. ..

Donna and The Dagger Lees....

Sony drop The Zutons

I have been meaning to put this story up for about a week or so, but for obvious reasons (see below) I have constantly been forgetting to get around to it.
The Zutons have just been dropped by Deltasonic / SonyBMG for apparently not meeting sales requirements on their third album, You Can Do Anything.

Priorities can be an odd thing and more often than not misplaced goals can lead questionable decisions and this could be one of those situations.
Claims are being thrown around at the moment that Sony were expecting the Zutons pick up Number 1 hits in the UK charts following the Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson cover of Valerie in 2007, but in realty that was never going to happen.
This is especially apparent considering the Winehouse version of Valerie is one of the highest selling singles of the decade thus far.

The album You Can Do Anything performed reasonably - charting at Number 6 in the UK album charts, but unfortunately the album's sole single, Always Right Behind You, fared less well coming in at Number 26.
(edit - is it superstition or irony that Always Right Behind You is the Zutons thirteenth single??)

Whether the group pick up from this and go to a new label remains to be seen, but chances of bands being picked up after they are dropped by a major and carrying on as if nothing happened are incredibly slim.
I wish them the best of luck in any case.

Road Records to close

While everyone else seems to be spewing pointless froth at the Choice Music Awards, a piece of news much more relevant to the Irish Music Industry has been doing the rounds over the last couple of hours and that is that Road Records on Fade St., Dublin, is set to close its doors in three weeks time. Rather than bollock on, I'll let Dave and Julie's statement speak for itself...

Lads and Lassies

First of all, thank you all for your kind words about our store and us personally, we really do appreciate it as Road has always been about a personal approach from day one.

I am very sad to say that we will in fact be closing down the store in the next 2 - 3 weeks as things have just become too difficult for us to proceed, we basically have no money left and as it is just a small shop run by Julie and myself we can longer afford to fund it. Belive me if we were at least breaking even each week then we would continue on in hope but as we are continually losing money, and have been for at least six months, we cannot carry on as any losses incurred will have to be personally paid for by us. We have put enough of our own money into the store in the last year just to keep it afloat but I am sad to say we really don't have anything left at this stage, if we continue to trade we will just continue to lose money that we honestly do not have any more and thus we will end up paying off bank loans for the rest of our lives. I know a lot of people think if you have your own store that you have money behind you but believe me that is just a myth.

Its been an absolutely amazing eleven years for us and neither of us regret one single second of it, when we close I will not be looking back on wasted time in any way.
We have made some amazing friends through the shop and have had the pleasure of dealing with some truly fantastic bands [and their members].
Without blowing my own trumpet I do think Dublin will be a worse place without us as I think from day one we were always the most approachable store for Irish bands and their independent releases, it was one of the main reasons for setting up the store [some of you may remember the fact that I spent most of my youth plugging away in bands with nowhere to sell our music] and we have always tried to be as supportive to local music as possible, mainly because people in this country make music as good as if not better than anywhere else but have never had a proper outlet to sell it. We have always had a policy to make sure to play Irish music in the store so people in here can hear it and understand the quality and diversity of music being made in Ireland. If we heard something that excited us then we would always go out of our way to promote it as much as possible both in the store and on the site.

The reasons for the downturn are many and varied and if there was just one then we could try overcome that in some way but its no longer possible to pinpoint just one.
I will try list some of the reasons I see for the death of the small shop and I really do hope I am not right in thinking that many more will go the same way, I have always been optimistic that this city can sustain a couple of smaller indie shops but I no longer believe that to be true, again, I really hope I am wrong with this opinion but the way people go about buying their music these days does not instill me with too much confidence.

1. Regardless of what I have thought over the years downloading has effected our business, probably more so the illegal side of things, filesharhing and the likes. I speak as a shop on this one but god knows how much small bands suffer because of this aswell.

2. Below cost sellers online, everybody wants a bargain and its hard to take the moral highground on this one, but everytime a purchase is made to the likes of Play etc is a nail in the coffin to the indie store, these online sellers don't care one hoot about indie bands and music, they just need to sell in bulk and as quickly as possible. They will never put any money or effort back into indigenous music, try asking them to sell 50 copies of a beautiful hand made cdr release.

3. The city centre just does not have the same volume of people walking around it anymore, its a simple fact, less people means less sales. We have noticed a massive downturn in the amount of people visiting the store in the last year.

4. Kids don't buy music anymore. That sounds like a fairly broad statement to make, I know there are still some out there but we don't see any young people in the shop anymore so as we lose older customers we don't gain any new ones.

5. Obviously this country is going through a recession at the moment so it would be stupid of me to claim that this wasn't having an effect on our business but having said that things were already beginning to change long before that.

6. The deal with selling independent local releases always had to be a two way exchange for us, we never made much money from local releases [and that was never the idea] but we always sought the support of bands. By that I mean if we were selling your music then we would always appreciate the bands making a purchase in the store in return, sadly that did not always happen, and before you jump at me for making this statement I do accept that plenty of you out there were very supportive of us but take if from me we did have quite a lot of bands coming in to us with their own release to sell whilst also carrying a hmv bag with a purchase they had just made, simply because it was cheaper there.

7. The cost of running a store in this city has increased dramatically in the past 4 / 5 years, rents have gone up so much, insurance increased, bank costs and so many other things that over the years it has become increasingly more difficult just to meet our costs on a week to week basis.

8. Whilst this one may not seem so obvious the cost of an average cd or record in the store is now less than it was 5 / 6 years ago and that is a good thing to the consumer but it has also seriously dented our chances of making a living in any way, it just means we have to sell more to cover our costs but as I mentioned with less customers coming through the door that has not been possible.

As you may gather from this piece we are both very very sad about the prospects of closing down our shop, this is our only way of making a living and now we are both back to square one with pretty much no money [and a brand new baby to support], I don't know what either of us are going to do from now on but I'm sure we will survive.

I say this from my heart that I really hope the last few remaining indie stores will survive in the city and I hope you can take time out to visit them and make a purchase, otherwise these stores will not make it through these times either, and don't leave it for a couple of weeks, do it today as they really do need your support and its only when they are all gone that you will then miss them.

Again, thank you all for your kind words and to anybody out there that has supported us in any way thank you also, we have had so much pleasure over the last eleven years doing what we do.

Dave and Julie

Road Records were the only shop in the entire country to ever stock LPX releases having been snubbed by everyone else, so this is especially bad news, for not just myself, but also artists at my level who only ever hope to shift 50-odd copies of a CD.
Their influence was long and wide, as their influence could often generate sales (not matter how small) outside the tiny spec of dirt that is Ireland. News of the worst kind indeed...

2009 Choice Music Awards

The nominations for the 2009 Choice Music Awards were posted today on Jim Carroll's blog - On the Record - this afternoon (the fallout was rather amusing). While I don't agree with all the albums on the list (I just don't get Messiah J & the Expert and the Script are dreadfully bland pop/rock), it still represents a fairly solid year of Irish releases.
The list reads as:
More notable about the nominations are the albums that did not make; for example there was no Spook of the Thirteenth Lock, Katie Kim or Chequerboard. Although I'm not a fan, there was still a belief that Adebisi Shank would be up there with their debut.
As of now, the Script are firm favourites, but the Choice Awards has surprised in the past (Devine Comedy in 2006 and Super Extra Bonus Party in 2007 for example) and the chance of another shock winner are always high on the cards. Personally I'm going for Jape to get the prize (and the cash).
All the info are screaming can be found at the "fallout" link above.

Fernando Alonso Plane Crash

It has just been revealed that Renault F1 driver Fernando Alonso had a minor plane accident yesterday when his light aircraft clipped a building just before take-off (how..?) from Nairobi.
Apparently there were no injuries, but just somewhat understandably nervous occupants following the incident.

The twice Formula 1 World Champion will now be making his way back to Europe later this week to commence testing on the 2009 car.

Anything to transform me into a wreck I suppose - I'll be facing the nightmare that is flying back to London tonight. Even now I'm already looking forward to going to bed.

Matt Smith

It was confirmed last night on Doctor Who Confidential that Matt Smith is the new Doctor from 2010 onwards when the show returns to the screens proper following a year off (not counting the TV movies of course). But who is Matt Smith..?

I must admit, the BBC has played this excellently. The corporation spent the last couple of weeks diverting attention towards the usual suspects (James Nesbitt, Richard E Grant, Steven Fry, etc...) and has once again gone for a complete unknown.
It is easy to forget that when Tennant himself was announced in the role in 2005, the general reaction amongst fandom was "who..?" (pun intended). Even Tom Baker was unheard of when he became the Doctor in 1974.
So, who is Matt Smith..? To be honest, I haven't a fucking clue...

Happy New Year

A small bit late (again), but happy new year folks. I brought in the new year with Super Extra Bonus Party's excellent headline show at Whelan's - also with DJ Robbie Coffey (good as always), Prince Kong (great stuff) and Adebisi Shank (sorry lads, I still don't get it).
Apart from that, my Mac is constantly breaking and I am seriously thinking of fucking it out the window - DON'T BUY MAC BOOKS!!

In other news, I finally checked out the Clint Eastwood film Heartbreak Ridge last night and it is quite possibly the best shit movie I have ever seen. If you want to see a film that checks every single cliché box available, see this one now - it was as if the writer's of the Simpson's had written a serious film about the US Marines. Ace stuff...
